How to Plant 1000 Avocado Plants: Episode 8: Weed Mat Installation: Protecting Your Investment

Welcome back! With our raised beds complete, irrigation lines set, and plants ordered, the focus shifts to creating a maintenance-friendly and disease-free environment for our 1000 avocado plants through the installation of a Weed Mat.

The Critical Role of Weed Control

Weed control is about more than just aesthetics; it’s a vital step in plant health and financial management:

  • Saves Time, Labor, and Cost: A dense weed population demands constant weeding, which drains time, increases labor costs, and distracts resources from critical plant care. Installing a weed mat controls this buildup, drastically reducing these maintenance costs.
  • Prevents Disease and Pests: It is crucial to keep the orchard clean and weed-free. Weeds can harbor fungal diseases and attract unwanted insects and pests that can damage your harvest and plants. A weed-mat creates a physical barrier, helping you maintain a healthy, clean growing area.

Our Recommended Weed Mat Solution

To ensure effective and long-lasting weed suppression on our beds, we use a specific, durable material:

  • Material: We use the Agriplast 100 GSM black weed mat. The 100 GSM (grams per square meter) rating indicates its density and durability, which provides excellent results.
  • Placement: The weed mats are installed directly on top of the raised beds. This prevents any weed growth near the sensitive root zones of the plants.
  • Tractor Access: By controlling weeds only on the beds, we make field management easier. Any weeds that grow in the clear space between the rows can be quickly and easily cleared using a tractor, minimizing effort and time.

Installation and Management

During installation, we make a strategic adjustment to the matting around the plant:

  • Cut-Outs: We place a small cut-out in the mat, approximately 2 feet by 1 foot, near the base of the plant. This is done for two main reasons:
    1. It allows us to easily arrange the drip lines right next to the plant.
    2. It ensures the base of the plant’s stem has room to breathe.

Installing the weed mat simplifies your orchard management, freeing up your time and focus to concentrate on the most important task: the actual care of your avocado plants.

Next Steps and Resources

Note that planting the Avocado Orchard is just the beginning. It is also crucial that we manage the plants well in order to maximize our yield and profits. For that, Avocado plant nutrition and fertigation becomes the most important thing to master.

If you are interested in learning how to correctly interpret your soil, leaf, and water tests to create an effective fertigation schedule, we have an Indo-Israel Avocado Fertigation Course to help you achieve the kind of rapid growth we’ve seen in our 2-year-old orchard.

Stay tuned for our next episode as we continue our journey on How to Plant 1000 Avocado Plants!
